Sue Hodges is the name and music and metadata are the names of the game! I am an Arizonan, but I am originally from the home of John Waters, the infamous metal venue Hammerjacks, the Bawlmer O's and the Ravens: Charm City USA (see The Wire or Homicide: Life on the Street for further information). Studied journalism, when I interned at a monthly music mag I got offered an associate editor position, I dropped out of college and took the writing gig.
So, from the mid-80s through the '90s, I was a punk/rock/hard rock/heavy metal music journalist for numerous national and international publications. From Aerosmith to Metallica to The Who, I covered the shows, interviewed the bands, and spent countless hours on the road. Recently I started penning articles on music once again with current interviews/reviews with Filter, Sound and Fury and New Model Army.
However, somehow I always found myself in a library in some position even when I was writing about Bon Jovi. There were many days I would get home from a show and interview then slip out of spandex and leather and turn into super library woman! I had a Jekyll and Hyde thing going on!
In the '90s, after a groupie backstage at an Aerosmith concert confused me for one of the member's mom (and Steven and the boys are a tad bit older than me!), I started writing about history and travel. During this time, I also studied Shakespearean Studies at Johns Hopkins University and Nonprofit Management at the College of Notre Dame. Then my interests led me to a degree in PR and Theatre Arts Management at Northern Arizona University, but something was missing...
After traveling many paths, I decided to return to school and become a "real" librarian.
My MLIS is from the University of Pittsburgh and I moved to the United States' second worst "Metropolitan Areas Most Polluted by Year-Round Particle Pollution," (according to the American Lung Association) only because of the degree program. I missed AZ everyday when I was there. (If you haven't been to Arizona, then you need to come visit my state...The skies at night are velvety black with pinpoints of heavenly lights poking through the curtain of night. And during the day the sun shines on your face and warms your soul.) However, back to the 'burgh, Andy Warhol was a Pittsburgher and the city boasts the largest museum dedicated to a single artist: The Andy Warhol Museum.
My library experience is primarily in academic settings, but I started as a "page" in a public library at 15 and I also worked for the AMAZING Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh on the Help and Reference desks (check out my "Libraries I Have Loved" link to see some of my favorite libraries and where I have worked). I would like to provide services to underserved populations in AZ or NM or work in a AZ/NM public or academic library and provide volunteer literacy assistance since "everyone" has a right to literacy. There is another degree (Ph.D.) in my future; I am a firm believer in lifelong learning!
I occasionally bang my head and mosh with the best of them, although I need a heating pad and Ibuprofen the next day. My theatre lust continues, and the greatest honor bestowed upon me was the title of Bawlmer's Best Hon in 2006 'cause my Bawlmer accent and look was spot on [see any John Waters' film for said look]). And Shakespearean theatre is my second love next to music.
Life is good.
